HOOPLA FOR YOUTH

"Anybody that`s everybody and everybody that`s anybody had something to Hoop-La! about at the Carmel Valley Kiwanis` annual Hoopla! Bar-B-Que which was last held on Friday, 01 August 2003 at the Carmel Valley Trail and Saddle Club.

"As I enter the grounds, the instant ole factory response of “mmm mmm good” entered my being with the two delectable, sumptuous, melt in your mouth wild pigs roasting nearby in the ground. When unearthed by Carmel Valley Kiwanis President , Kent Zilliox along with Kiwanis members, Jim Sheppard and Bud McDonald the excitement mounted.

"Finally the unfolding of its banana leaf cocoon surgically done by Kiwanis, Ray Foster, where inside the edible work of art, one found apples, garlic, pineapple and many other treats to behold and flavor the porkly delight. Those not in the roast pig mode had the option of having divinely seasoned steak and chicken which was grilling nearby by the kings of the Barbeque grill and Kiwanis members, Gene Erner (also an official pig stuffer), John Catherwood and Jeff Markow. Served up with a side dish of yet another Kiwanis, Web Buckham`s famous beans (a must have item at any hoopla) and the freshest, hand tossed salad by Kiwanis, Otto and Mrs. Hubner made for a palatable pleasure of the best Barbeque kind.

"Adding to the festivities and bringing the evening to a full circle were the foot shufflin` old time swing tunes of The Del Monte Express, a seventeen piece swing band. One could truly say that entertainment was had by all!

"The funds raised by a turn out of over 400 in attendance and a silent auction consisting of various items donated by local business and individuals benefit various local youth organizations.

"The Carmel Valley Kiwanis have out done themselves once again with their group consisting of seasoned and up and coming professionals managing to organize a fabulous and flawless fund raising event to include a good time for all. The teamwork and camaraderie reflects in the success and the happy faces I met at the annual Hoopla Event.

"I shall surely return again next year and support our local youth groups so that they are enabled to grow and make a difference in the world. A round of Applause for the Carmel Valley Kiwanis - A job well done!"
